A Scrum Master facilitates the Scrum framework, coaches the team on Scrum practices, removes impediments, and drives continuous improvement in our iterative development eCommerce department.
Key skills
- Facilitation: plan and run all agile ceremonies (planning, daily stand-ups, reviews, retrospectives) and shield the team from distractions.
- Coaching and Servant Leadership: mentor the team to self-organize, embrace agile mindsets, and continuously improve.
- Communication: clear status updates to stakeholders, effective listening, and transparent risk and dependency management.
- Stakeholder Management: align with Product Owner, Delivery Lead, and other stakeholders; manage expectations and escalate when needed.
- Backlog Management: collaborate with Product Owner to prioritize, refine, and maintain a healthy backlog; ensure sprint goals are clear.
- Metrics & Data-Driven Improvement: track velocity, cycle time, lead time, sprint/Release predictability; use insights to remove bottlenecks.
- Release Management: own the release lifecycle, coordinate cross-team dependencies, assess risks, and orchestrate smooth production releases.
- Risk and Impediment Management: identify, escalate, and resolve risks and blockers quickly.
- Dependency Management: coordinate with cross-functional teams to manage dependencies and ensure alignment.
- Tool Proficiency: Jira, Confluence, and related Atlassian tools; basic CI/CD awareness; familiarity with ServiceNow for RFCs.
- Documentation and Compliance: maintain DoD/DoR alignment, RFCs, release plans, and related documentation.
- Change and Onboarding Management: manage resource changes, onboarding of new team members, and knowledge transfer with minimal disruption.
- Vendor and Access Management: coordinate vendor access requests and account extensions when needed (e.g., 30-day advance reminders).
- Collaboration and Facilitation of Communities of Practice: participate in and contribute to Scrum Master CoP and cross-team syncs.
- Analytical Thinking and Problem Solving: diagnose process issues, propose data-supported improvements, and measure impact.
Core responsibilities
- Facilitate Scrum ceremonies and protect the team from disruptions.
- Ensure sprint planning produces a clear sprint goal and a prioritized sprint backlog (in collaboration with the PO).
- Track and report sprint metrics; validate automated reports (e.g., EOS) for accuracy and coordinate corrections with relevant teams (e.g., Atlassian Team).
- After each sprint:
- Validate EOS reports
- Distribute sprint review materials (presentation, recording link if available, EOS report)
- Release and Deployment
- Own and coordinate the release management lifecycle
- Create fix versions in Jira following defined standards
- Maintain release management documentation and process documentation
- Create a Confluence page detailing the release plan on the Royal Web Support Site, categorized by month
- Generate RFCs in Service Now and follow the RFC submission guidelines
- Communicate release updates via email; provide release notes, risks, and dependency details
- Resource and People Management
- Identify and communicate resource changes (capacity and skill gaps)
- Communicate additions and removals of team members to the Global eCommerce Team Updates distribution list
- Collaborate with HR and management for smooth transitions; ensure knowledge transfer and minimal disruption
- Onboard new team members following the current onboarding process
- Governance, Documentation, and Compliance
- Maintain DoD/DoR alignment; ensure testing activities are coordinated; oversee post-release reviews
- Meetings and Collaboration
- Facilitate Value Stream meetings; participate in and support delivery governance
- Attend and contribute to governance and reporting ceremonies:
- Delivery Team Sync
- APMO Portfolio Level Report
- Portfolio Level Risk Registry Review
- Scrum Master CoP
- Stakeholder Alignment
- Align and communicate with engineering, product, operations, QA, legal/compliance, and other teams
- Provide clear status updates, release notes, risk and dependency management, and escalation paths
- Continuous Improvement
- Drive metrics and process improvements; optimize workflows; leverage tooling to accelerate flow and quality
Operational improvements and notes
- Maintain clear communication about team composition and changes to minimize disruption.
- Ensure onboarding and knowledge transfer follow established processes and playbooks.
